"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." - Isaiah 9:6
During December we are looking at how Jesus fulfilled each of the different roles that Isaiah describes above. Last week we explored Jesus as "Wonderful Counsellor" and this week we are going to focus on the role of "Mighty God".
Warren Wiersbe says:
"The fact that Jesus Christ is called "Mighty God" indicates that he is God."
The Bible confirms this for us many times.
In Isaiah 40:3, Isaiah prophetically points out to the people a clear line for the LORD.
"A voice of one calling:
In the wilderness prepare
the way for the LORD;
a highway for our God."
At the time of Jesus' birth in Luke 2:3-4, an angel of the Lord appeared to shepherds in a field and told them that:
"Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the LORD. "
In both these pieces of scriptures, we see the title 'the LORD' which is often written in the Bible in capital letters to represent the divine name of God.
In John 5:23, Jesus says:
"That all should honour the Son just as they honour the Father. He who does not honour the Son does not honour the Father who sent Him".
And at the close of His sermon on the Good Shepherd in John 10:30, Jesus boldly says:
"I and My Father are one."
Jesus is LORD, He is "El Gibbor" - Hebrew for "Mighty God". Our King Jesus is the divine warrior.
When we think about the word "Mighty", it is often with trepidation. Mighty governments might come to mind, leaders who use force and brutality to get what they want, or people who exercise their power and authority without regard for others.
Unlike our worldly leaders, Jesus is above all authority. We can have great hope that when we call on his name, He will answer and deliver us. But we need to surrender wholeheartedly to Him.
Jesus possesses all might, power and strength. His might is unparalleled, unmatched and unequalled. There is no one like Him and no one as Mighty as Him. He is the God of utmost power!
In full deity, our Mighty God humbled himself and took the form of a man, so he could relate to all that we as humans go through. Only a Saviour who has been there and done that is great enough to be Mighty God.
A word spoken by Jesus had an impact miles away. A touch transformed mangled bones and diseased flesh. He opened dull, unseeing eyes, He loosened tongues so they could praise Him. He restrained demons and turned peoples' minds so they could tell others about " the Mighty God".
But the greatest act of power that Jesus did on earth involved his death and resurrection. He was willing to lay down His life and be poured out to save us. He was strong and mighty enough to lay down His perfect, all-powerful strength for everyone and His resurrection guarantees our redemption:
"In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace." - (Ephesians 1:7)
His mighty power is available to us today. Jesus has the power to change our hearts, forgive our sins, renew our thinking, carry us when we cannot go on, lift us when we fall, heal us when we hurt and then use our pain to mould us into His image. We just have to believe in Him and trust in Him.
Jesus is Mighty to save, so love and serve our Mighty God.
God bless
