Looks

Psalm 139:13-14

"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well."

We live in a time obsessed with image, with popularity and with appearance. Magazine covers trumpet the ease and value of plastic surgery, and are devoted to dieting and losing weight through 'weight loss injections' and surgery. Entire television shows are designed to give us "truly Cinderella -like experiences" real life "fairy tales", in which our wishes come true, not just to change our looks, but our lives and destinies.

Too many of us are analysing our features and comparing ourselves with people we observe on TV, in magazines and on social media. Culture also encourages us to spend much energy "finding ourselves" because the world tells us that self reliance and self discovery are essential for our personal growth and happiness.

But, an 'image-obsessed' culture, where appearance and physical attractiveness is highly valued, can lead to negative consequences, like body image issues, anxiety and a constant pursuit of unattainable beauty standards, which can lead to feelings of low self worth and low self esteem.

Psalm 139:13-14, emphasises the profound way God created us.

He knows everything about us.

The deepest and most true understanding of who we actually are, does not come from looking at ourselves, it comes from looking to our Creator.

The One who knitted us together in our mother's womb did so with specific intention, unique purpose and so much love.

He not only made us, but He is constantly shaping us into who He made us to be, so that we can reach our full potential. We have never been overlooked or forgotten by Him.

We don't have to strive for His attention, or prove our value, He already knows us, and calls us as His own. As we reflect on His deep knowledge of us, may we rest in the truth that we are fully known and fully loved.

When we walk fully in the identity He has given us, our lives are proof that Jesus is who He says He is. But when we live outside of His design, doubting our worth, chasing the world's definition of identity, we diminish His evidence in our lives.

Questions we can ask ourselves are:

"Am I using my body to the glory of God?"

"Is my body a vessel for God's use?"

Our bodies are "fearfully and wonderfully made" and an amazing gift from God, given to us to love and serve the God who loved us so much, He gave His Son to die for us.

Let us love our Heavenly Father, with all our heart, soul, mind and strength and love our neighbour as ourselves, free of the need to look or act a certain way. We can then be free to focus on using our bodies to worship and serve our wonderful Creator and Saviour.

What a joy that we are more than our bodies! We are more than our looks, our weight and our size.

We are children of God who can become more and more like Him each day.

How incredible is that!

God bless
