Jesus walks on the water - Matthew 14:22-35

In this scripture we read about Jesus' disciples hopping in a boat and then getting caught in a storm over a mile from land. They were being battered by the waves with the wind against them. They must have been terrified!

Then, Jesus walked out to them on the water and it was Peter who said:

"Lord, if it's you, tell me to come to you on the water". (Verse 28)

Jesus said one word:

"Come". (verse 29)

We see Peter getting out of the boat at Jesus' command and start walking on the water. He was doing really well, until he saw the strength of the wind and was frightened, and he took his eyes off Jesus and then he began to sink.

After Jesus catches Peter He says:

"You of little faith, why did you doubt?" (verse 31)

I can't help thinking that Jesus was referring to the sustainability of Peter's faith, after all, Peter was the only disciple who was bold and impulsive enough to get out of the boat.

This story teaches us that while bold faith can get us out of the boat, it's steady faith that keeps us above water. The strength of our faith isn't always measured by the moves we make, but how steadfast we remain in the midst of a storm.

Many of us have starting power but real faith is marked by staying power.

The apostle Paul wrote in 2 Timothy 4:7

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."

He knew that faith that endures, is the goal!

But how do we keep the faith when we are in the midst of a storm?

We keep our minds focused on Jesus.

When we focus solely on the difficulties we are facing, it leads to a sense of hopelessness and fear, which diverts our attention away from Jesus' unwavering strength and provision.

Peter's sinking was caused by doubt creeping into his heart. Doubt erodes our faith and prevents us from fully trusting in Jesus' power.

It's enduring faith that keeps us afloat in life's storms.

Like Peter, we will experience doubt, but our faith should be grounded in the character and the word of God.

It is during challenging times in our lives, we need to hold on to Jesus even tighter, knowing that He is our Rock and Deliverer.

God bless
